With a total number of passengers of 590.919 - which means an increase of 33% in the number of passengers for 2008 - Košice Airport clearly exceeded the average development of other regional airports in Central Europe

In the past year Košice Airport handled 590.919 passengers on 12.932 take-offs and landings (+19%). Košice Airport also recorded a plus of 34% in maximum take-off weight (MTOW). Furthermore over 457 tones of cargo were handled in 2008 (+73%). The total number of passengers using scheduled flights was 483.743 passengers. Summarizing, on international routes Košice Airport handled 395.582 passengers, 195.337 passengers used domestic lines.

The major driver for the strong growth in passenger volume was the increase on international flights to/from Prague, Dublin, London and Manchester. The most passengers on international flights were recorded by Prague with 168.000 (+36%). On the routes to UK a total of 86.000 passengers were transported in 2008. Also the domestic traffic between Košice and Bratislava continued to perform positively. In 2008 a total of 192.000 domestic passengers were recorded (+9%).

The leader among the scheduled carriers was SkyEurope Airlines, followed by Czech Airlines and Austrian Airlines. The second time in a row the charter traffic showed a very positive development. A total of 408 take offs included Košice in their flight plans for summer travel season to 18 destinations in 2008. The total number of charter passengers was 98.500. The highest share of passengers in this traffic segment was recorded to Hurghada followed by Burgas and Monastir.

In accordance with the investment plan for the period XI/2007-X/2008 the company spent 75 mil. Sk. in order to upgrade and adapt both terminals including the introduction of a new airport lounge for the business traveller. These investments enabled Košice International Airport to become the official Schengen airport as of summer season 2008. Further investments were made in order to upgrade the service level of operation and to fulfil the international standards of passenger flow and security.

The aviation industry has not remained untouched by the current economic developments, and the region of Košice is also unable to detach from this trends. SkyEurope Airlines stopped its operation to Dublin and Prague at the end of October and reduced its flight pattern to Bratislava at the end of the year.

In the month of December 2008 Košice Airport handled 29.512 passengers (i.e. 19% less than in December 2007) on handled 748 flights (i.e. 11% less than December 2007) with 10.763 t (MTOW) on landings. Compared with the passenger figures of December 2006 this still means an increase of 34%. The drop of traffic figures during December 2008 is directly related to the cancellation of direct flights to/from Dublin and Prague by SkyEurope Airlines and also to a higher number of cancellations of flights during the Christmas season. Summarizing, on international routes Košice Airport handled 15.787 passengers (i.e. 24% less than December 2007), 13.122 passengers used domestic services (i.e. 12% less than December 2007). In total 10,8 tones of cargo were transported in this month.
